At Argo & Lehne Jewelers, we believe in celebrating the beauty of nature and the creativity it inspires. That’s why we’re thrilled to feature the incredible work of Juliet Mullett, a local wildlife artist whose current exhibit will bring a new level of appreciation for Ohio’s natural beauty to Art at Argo’s. Her journey, passion, and dedication to both art and conservation make her story as captivating as her creations.
A Lifetime of Inspiration
Born in Cuyahoga Falls, just north of Akron, Juliet Mullett grew up surrounded by nature. Behind her childhood home was “The Gorge,” a park with trails winding along the Cuyahoga River, now a national park. It was there her education in wildlife began. As a teenager, her family moved to an abandoned farmhouse in Tuscarawas County, where wild animals far outnumbered people. “Living there was like getting a master’s degree in Ohio’s wildlife,” she recalls.
For the next 25 years, she taught high school English and art in Columbus. Retirement opened the door to a new chapter in her life: combining her love of art with her passion for conservation.
A Mission to Inspire
For a decade, Juliet Mullett focused on endangered species, hoping her detailed artwork would help people connect with these animals on a deeper level. “If people fall in love with a species through art, they’re more likely to want to protect it,” she explains. Today, her focus has evolved to showcase success stories through her “Back from the Brink” presentations, which feature her artwork and celebrate species making a comeback thanks to conservation efforts.
Rather than sounding the siren of alarm, her goal is to inspire hope and action by highlighting what’s working in wildlife conservation. She is especially passionate about educating Ohio residents on the incredible diversity of wildlife in their own backyards. With five physiographic regions, Ohio is home to a rich array of species, a fact she hopes more people will recognize and celebrate.
The Art of Detail
Juliet Mullett specializes in realism, dedicating up to 40 hours to a single drawing. She uses watercolor pencils, a medium that is practical, affordable, and perfect for achieving fine details while maintaining the softness of a painted look. “I chose watercolor pencils for their versatility and ease. They allow me to focus on the details that bring each subject to life,” she shares.
Her process is rooted in research, which she finds both fulfilling and essential. “I’m always learning about wildlife throughout Ohio and beyond,” she says. That love of learning fuels her artwork and helps her educate others about the importance of conservation.
Advocating for Wildlife Artists
In addition to her art, Juliet Mullett is an advocate for wildlife artists, believing their mission and impact are vital. “I hope the Columbus art community and others take wildlife artists more seriously. Our work is needed now more than ever to make our world the most beautiful place it can be.”
She organizes her work around themes, such as her recent exhibit, Plant & Animal Relationships, a collaboration with Dispatch nature writer and photographer Jim McCormac. Her newest theme explores the wildlife of Ohio’s metro parks, celebrating the unique species that call our state home.
Commissioned Work and More
Juliet Mullett offers commissioned pieces, focusing on Ohio and other wildlife, as well as the occasional farm animal. Her artwork is available at $500 for an approximate 16″x 20″ framed piece. While she doesn’t sketch pets, people, or property, her focus on the natural world results in stunning, lifelike depictions that connect viewers to the beauty of the wild.
She also illustrated a book about bison called Born on the Prairie, available on Blurb.com. Her work has reached even broader audiences through projects like a sold-out t-shirt for the metro parks.
