Art at Argo’s: Kathy Ludlam

Dear art enthusiasts and friends of Art at Argo’s,

We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to the newest addition to our creative community, Kathy Ludlam, whose much-anticipated exhibition, “Home and Away,” will grace our walls starting in mid January. In a departure from our recent watercolor-focused exhibitions, Kathy brings a fresh perspective to the gallery, showcasing her exquisite talents in the medium of oil. Hailing from the vibrant city of Columbus, Ohio, and calling the picturesque neighborhood of Marble Cliff her home, Kathy’s art is a reflection of her profound connection to both her local surroundings and the distant corners of the world. Having embarked on extensive journeys and resided in various overseas locales, her paintings serve as vibrant windows into the places that have left an indelible mark on her soul. We invite you to join us in celebrating Kathy’s unique vision and the vivid stories she brings to life on canvas.

About the Artist

Kathy Ludlam’s artistic journey has been woven intricately into the fabric of Columbus, Ohio, for the past 23 years. A devoted mother who raised two children in the Columbus area, Kathy’s roots trace back to the landscapes of New Jersey. However, her family’s adventures led them to diverse corners of the globe. From the historic halls of Princeton, to the serene countryside outside of London in Surrey, and the romantic outskirts of Paris, Kathy’s experiences have been as diverse as her artistic inspirations. Settling in Burlingame, California, provided yet another chapter in her artistic evolution. However, it’s Columbus that she discovered her true passion for oil painting, a medium that has allowed her to convey her unique perspective with breathtaking precision.

A Learning Process

Kathy’s growth as an artist has been nurtured by her deep connections within the art community. She is an active member of an informal monthly art club, a supportive circle of talented female artists who come together to share insights and offer valuable feedback on works in progress. Kathy’s commitment to lifelong learning is evident through her participation in workshops led by both local luminaries like Joe Lombardo and nationally acclaimed artists like Mark Boedges. She cherishes the wisdom gained from each session, believing that even a single nugget of knowledge can transform one’s artistic journey. Her distinctive style, characterized by representational, contemporary realism, exudes a calming energy that invites viewers to pause and appreciate the often-overlooked beauty in everyday scenes. Kathy’s fascination with shadows, a recurrent motif in her work, adds depth and dimension to her creations. As her brushstrokes continue to evolve, so too does the captivating allure of her art, leaving an indelible mark on all who have the privilege to experience it.

Artist Statement

“Thank you for your interest in my art.

This show reflects places that are very meaningful to me. This includes a number of favorite destinations I enjoy visiting as well as my favorite place to be, which is home. Whether I’m visiting friends or family or taking my daily neighborhood walk, I am always on the lookout for the next painting subject. My life experiences are reflected in a fundamental way in how I paint and what I choose to paint.

When I see something that excites me, that usually means light has fallen on the subject that compels me to think, how would I paint that? In addition to exploring the relationship between sunlight and shadow, I am also attracted to color temperature (warm and cool color) as well as color saturation (intense or muted color). This can include the vibrant, saturated colors of a summer bouquet, the darker, cooler color of early evening, or the nuanced, neutral colors of an overcast day. These all require different palettes which I find exciting to explore.

I hope that you enjoy these paintings as much as I have enjoyed painting them!”
