Working in a third generation jewelry store, I’m often asked, “What’s the secret of Argo & Lehne’s success?”

For those who don’t know me, I’m Michelle Berger, President of Argo & Lehne Jewelers. Native to Upper Arlington, I left for 15 years, returned to Columbus and collaborated with the Argo’s to lead the store in a new direction. We had countless meetings identifying the store’s unique niche in our local industry, our target customers and where we see ourselves in the future. Whatever changes we made, we knew we would be consistent and authentic with who we have always been: a jeweler with the highest quality products, highest ethical standards and highest level of service – a Columbus tradition.

The Victorian Era

If the Victorians were anything, they were thoughtful and symbolic. Every action and image had its place in sending a message. When courting a woman, a young man would have gone through a series of small trials before even sitting in the same room with a woman and her chaperone. We’ve departed from some of these customs, but some things never fade.

Upper Arlington Historical Society joins us for “A Gem in our Community.”

This Saturday we were honored to host the Upper Arlington Historical Society. Former co-owner, Dick Argo, appeared as our guest speaker and discussed Argo & Lehne’s history in the Columbus area. After listening to his talk, I thought it would be interesting to our readers to revisit Columbus through the eyes of a thriving jewelry store which has had multiple locations during the years.  I’ve collected the information to make a two part series: “The History of Shopping in Columbus: Downtown to Kingsdale” and “Argo & Lehne Unveiled: The Secrets to our Continued Success”.

Water’s Edge, 40″ x 30″

It was at the Columbus Museum of Art Women’s Board luncheon at Scioto Country Club when I first heard about Suzanne Robinson. I had inquired about local artists known for their landscape paintings and a few had mentioned the beauty of Suzanne’s work. I was able to find her website and was very taken by her subtle landscapes.

Once we finally met, I knew that her work would be a perfect fit for Argo & Lehne’s: Art at Argo’s. Now, I sit at my desk and look up at her paintings and it is as if they were meant to be here all along.

Excitement, romance, intense love, fun, joy, the warmth of a supportive community of friends and family – our feelings as we, Bob, Glenda and Will Argo, shared in the wedding of our son/brother, Josh, and his best friend and love of his life, the beautiful Ayaka.

Josh worked for several years at Argo & Lehne while in school. After discovering a love of the Japanese language and culture at OSU, he wanted to experience it firsthand. Josh has been living and working for 5 years in Japan where he was introduced to Ayaka by a mutual friend (whom we got to meet). After that, no turning back – I believe it was, as they say, meant to be! Here is a brief timeline noting some charming differences from American weddings. (more…)

About the Artist

Vivian came to us as a customer in June. As she admired the works in our Art at Argo’s: “Impressions of Light and Landscape” by Frances McEwan Monfort, we discussed her own paintings. I learned that Vivian is an accomplished artist of varied subject matter. She works in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and colored pencil (sometimes combining media), always striving to achieve beauty in each medium through her emotional use of color and tone.
